Border 2012 is the latest iteration of a U.S.-Mexican border environmental cooperation effort that dates back to the early 1980s (see http://www.epa.gov/usmexicoborder/). Since the U.S. Department of the Interior did not participate in the development of Border 2012 and there are currently no task forces that deal with biological resources. Therefore, the Tijuana River Watershed Task Force and other interested groups such as USFWS proposed the formation of Ecology Subgroup that provides the Task Force with critical information about the ecology of the TRW. The members formulated the following objectives: 1. Create a communication network focused on ecological and conservation opportunities 2. Create a directory of TRW researchers in the area of ecology and conservation 3. Create a list of research priorities in ecology and conservation for the TRW 4. Identify sources of funding for ecology research and conservation in the TRW 5. Review the las Californias Binational Conservation Initiative and seek opportunities for its implementation (see http://trw.sdsu.edu) 6. Review the Binational Vision for the TRW and seek opportunities for its implementation (see http://trw.sdsu.edu) 7. Inventory the flora and fauna of the TRW to provide authorities with baseline data for enforcement of related regulations 8. Create a border-region sensitive species of flora and fauna list starting with reviewing las Californias Binational Conservation Initiative, the Tijuana Ordenamiento Territorial, the DGE Plan Estatal de Ordenamiento Territorial, and the inventory in #7. 9. Work with SANDAG and USGS binational natural resource maps 10. Create ties with educational groups such as the Border 2012 Environmental Education Task Force ************************************************** El programa Frontera 2012 es la iteración más reciente de un esfuerzo de cooperación ambiental en la frontera México-EE.UU. que se remonta a principios de la década de los años 80 (véase http://www.epa.gov/usmexicoborder/).
